Pelham Monument Restoration Fundraiser

Writer's picture: Brandy Station FoundationBrandy Station Foundation

John Pelham, born September 7, 1838, was a Confederate cavalry soldier under J. E. B. Stuart. He was scheduled to graduate from West Point in 1861 but left to join the Confederate forces. Robert E. Lee called Pelham "The Gallant Pelham" for his use of light artillery at the Battle of Fredericksburg. Pelham died from a shrapnel wound at the Battle of Kelly’s Ford on March 17, 1863.

The original monument was commissioned in October 1927 and placed at the intersection of Beverly Ford Road and U.S. 29 in Elkton, Virginia.

The marble monument sits on a granite rock brought from the  nearby field at Kelly’s Ford where Pelham was mortally wounded.

The location of the monument became a busy intersection. Both the Pelham Chapter of the UDC in Birmingham, Alabama and the Culpeper Chapter of the UDC voted to convey the real property and the Pelham monuments to the Brandy Station Foundation in 2013. The marble monument and the granite rock on which it sat were moved to the lot across the street from the Graffiti House by Johnny Price, monument manager at Found and Sons with the assistance of D.J. Smith, along with the help of Peppe Troilo, of Rosson & Troilo.

A visitor recently commented on the weathered appearance of the John Pelham monument made of marble and suggested a cleaning. The Brandy Station Foundation is trying to raise $750 for this project; the initial and two subsequent cleanings.
