About the event

July 16, 2023, 2 PM. Dr. Anita Henderson will present "Maria Lewis, Black Female Trooper of the 8th NY Cavalry" at the Graffiti House, 19484 Brandy Road in Brandy Station, part of the Brandy Station Foundation Sunday lecture series. 

Free ; refreshments provided & donations to the Foundation are welcomed. Seating is limited, so please come early.  Anita is a member of the Company of Military Historians and Atlantic Guard Soldier's Aid Society, an authentic civilian living history group. She interprets both a military and civilian impression: a mounted cavalry bugler currently riding with the 13th VA Cavalry,  Co. H, Light Sussex Dragoons and also an enslaved/free black woman. She has done background artist work in a variety of documentary, independent and Hollywood films including Wicked Spring, The Unmasking of Sarah Edmonds, Racing the Times, Civilians Desolate, Civilians Free, and Gods and Generals. Dr. Henderson has been working on a 20+ year long research project on Maria Lewis, Black Female Trooper of the 8th NY Cavalry.
